The New York Yankees are a desperate team right now. Every move, every pitch, every game is critical. When you’re facing a guy like Chris Sale, it makes it that much harder. Nevertheless, two days after their worst loss of the year, they might’ve gotten their best win of the year as the Yankees came back and beat Chicago 6-4.
The Sox struck first off Hiroki Kuroda, who continues to struggle. Gordon Beckham doubled two batters in, and Adam Dunn singled him home after Alexei Ramirez reached on an error. Beckham would give the Yanks a run in the bottom of the second.
Vernon Wells reached on an infield single, but Beckham tried to play it and kicked the ball which allowed Wells to go to second. Eduardo Nunez reached when Conor Gillaspie botched a ground ball. Then the Yankees did something you rarely see them do, double steal. Wells stole home on the throw through when Nunez tried to steal second.
The Sox took the lead back in the fifth. Alejandro De Aza singled and stole second, and Beckham followed with a walk. Ramirez followed with a triple to bring them both home. De Aza would add his 15th homer of the year to make it 4-1.
Sale had shut down the Yankee bats all night long, that is until the eighth. After a strikeout, Derek Jeter singled and Robinson Cano followed with a double to knock out Sale. Enter Nate Davis who would give up a two run single to Alfonso Soriano and a single to Alex Rodriguez. Curtis Granderson would hit for Wells, so the Sox countered with Donnie Veal. Didn’t help. Granderson’s single would tie the game. After a strikeout, Matt Lindstrom would come in and give up the eventual game winning double to Nunez.
YGY Player Of The Game: Nunez
Notes: Derek Jeter is now by himself in ninth place on the all time hit list.
